The idea behind AutoCAD was to produce a CAD program that was easier to learn, designed with a higher level of functionality, and yet affordable. History

AutoCAD was developed at a time when the state of CAD software was bad. CAD applications at the time were complex, expensive and difficult to learn. In 1981, a new, more affordable, high-functionality CAD program was developed. This program, Autodesk Dimension, was developed for the Tandy Corporation, which marketed the program as „AutoCAD-One“ on their Tandy 1000 computer (which was later renamed the TRS-80 Model 100). The price of Dimension was one-third of that of the leading CAD program at the time, AutoCAD.

When Tandy decided to market the software on microcomputers with built-in graphics controllers, Autodesk came up with a new name for Dimension, „AutoCAD“. „AutoCAD“ was a word that stood for „Automatic Computer Aided Design“, and the new program would be a „subset“ of it, which meant it would be easier to learn than the previous Dimension.

In February 1983, Dimension was released for the Apple II, Commodore 64, IBM PC, and TRS-80, with a retail price of US$395 (or approximately US$760 in 2018 dollars). On April 30, 1983, Autodesk released AutoCAD as a desktop app for the Apple II. In December 1983, Dimension was ported to the IBM PC and sold for $479.95.

AutoCAD for the IBM PC allowed for higher resolution graphics displays, as well as finer line and dot spacing (which made it easier to work in small spaces). Since Dimension already had vector graphics, and because the new AutoCAD did not, this new version of AutoCAD was one of the first to use vectors instead of shapes and paths. The new AutoCAD also supported displays at a resolution of 512 by 32 pixels, which was far more versatile
